In the run-up to Pope Francis’ visit, Papua New Guinea made international headlines with negative news. At the beginning of the year, serious unrest broke out in the capital, Port Moresby. In the Province of Enga, there were also tribal conflicts resulting in dozens of deaths as well as a severe landslide that claimed more than 2,000 lives.

Almost 30 years after Pope John Paul II’s second visit to Papua New Guinea, Pope Francis’ three-day visit in September 2024 was once again a historic highlight for the Christians of this island
