European aid. These countries became independent in 1991 after the collapse of the Soviet Union and have been members of the EU since 2004. Many Christians here are still searching for orientation and support in their faith. In other Northern European countries such as Iceland, Norway, Finland and Sweden, most of the faithful come from abroad. Although these are predominantly rich countries, the diaspora situation means that the local churches find it difficult to fulfil their tasks on their own. With 2.8 million inhabitants, Lithuania is the largest of the three Baltic states. 80% of the population are Catholics.
