are far from sufficient. During the communist era, all religions were persecuted, even more cruelly here than in other communist-ruled countries. Albania declared itself the ‘first atheist country in the world’ in 1967. Religious freedom has only been restored since the political turnaround in 1990/91. Nevertheless, much work remains to be done to nurture the faith of new generations.
