the inhabitants of the Zanzibar Archi- pelago, which forms an autonomous republic of the country, are Muslim. The Islamic separatist movement Uam- sho, which sees itself as an “alliance for Islamic mobilisation and propagation”, has been gaining political influence there for around 15 years. The pro- portion of Muslims along the former caravan routes is also higher than in the rest of the country. In recent years, hate sermons and religiously motivated attacks and assaults have increased on both Zanzibar and the mainland, with terrorist attacks particularly frequent along the border with Mozambique. Despite the challenges of poverty and vast distances, the Catholic Church in Tanzania remains vibrant and contin- ues to enjoy numerous religious voca- tions. We therefore focus on supporting the training of prospective priests and religious. We support poor priests with

130 ethnic groups who speak over 120 different languages. Christians – main- ly Catholics – make up the majority of the population at 55%. Muslims make up just under a third of the total population. ACN supports the young and vibrant Church in Tanzania, which often lacks the resources to adequately care for the faithful, and also assists it in areas where Christians form a small minority. Religious conflicts have increased sig- nificantly in Tanzania in the recent past. Many Christian communities are under pressure from radical Islamists, whose presence varies significantly across different regions. For example, 98% of
