But more priests are also urgently nee- ded in the remote and nearly impassable areas in the mountains or in the mission areas of the Amazon. And if the faithful in these vast parishes do not receive ade- quate pastoral care, hopelessness begins to spread.

One notable example is the Apostolic Vicariate of Yurimaguas in eastern Peru, a region largely covered by jungle. Approximately 285,000 Catholics from various indigenous tribes live here, scattered over an area of 72,000 square kilometres that is difficult to access. Pastoral work is particularly difficult here. For this reason, ACN supports the training of 24 prospective priests who

grew up in the vicariate, ensuring they are well prepared for the region’s climate and the unique challenges of the jungle. However, the training of catechists is also a matter that is close to our hearts, as they also play an important role in proclaiming the faith. At the same time, we provide many commu- nities with catechetical material to deepen their faith. We also support religious sisters who help the poor and weak under the most difficult conditions and are often the only hope for those affected.
